- Vinous 93/100: Dark, moody and earthy in nature, the 2019 Piglio Superiore San Giovanni opens slowly with crushed stone, alpine herbs and woodland berries, gaining lift through a hint of menthol. The textures are silky-smooth, soothing the palate just as a wave of peppery wild berries cuts through, coasting across a core of brilliant acidity and giving way to pretty violet florals toward the close. This finishes persistent, lightly structured and almost salty, with a hint of licorice slowly tapering off. The San Giovanni could use a year or two to come fully into focus.
